Forget department stores and online shopping. Sure, it’s not the most convenient to travel halfway around the world to do your Christmas shopping. But when you discover the best holiday markets to visit this winter, you’ll never want to do your present buying at the mall again.

Bryant Park Winter Village: New York

The Winter Village at Bryant Park is Manhattan’s very own winter wonderland. In the heart of the city’s towering skyscrapers, Bryant Park transforms from a tiny park into a European-style, open-air market. Head here for ice skating, holiday shops, and The Lodge, which offers a full bar and food.

While the oldest Christmas market in Old Square dazzles, Zurich’s urban Christmas Village, Wienachtsdorf, offers 100 market stalls selling anything-but-ordinary holiday gifts, as well as traditional glasses of glühwein (mulled wine). And your reward for finishing your holiday shopping? A fondue chalet, where traditional Swiss fare is on the menu.

Hyde Park Winter Wonderland: London

Hyde Park is magical all year long, but especially so under the twinkling Christmas lights. Take in the view from the world’s tallest transportable observation wheel, hit the UK’s largest outdoor ice skating rink, and don’t forget the markets. In more than 100 Barvarian-style wooden chalets, you’ll find plenty of gift ideas for friends and family alike — and maybe even a gift for yourself.
